BMW 118D Car Review in UK
If you’ve come to the conclusion that the newer versions of green cars are a bore to drive, well you obviously haven’t given the BMW 118D a try. Most people think that low emission vehicles are often slow and lacking in terms of stability and power but the 118D puts an end to those assumptions. For BMW, cleaner cars need not compromise performance and power and thus fitted its 1 series range with the EfficientDynamics package with the 118D being the greenest of the lot.
Let’s talk engines.
If you are a petrol user, you have a choice between 120bhp 1.6, 141bhp and 168bhp 2.0-litre petrol engines whilst diesel users could choose from four different kinds of 2.0-litre engines. This includes 114bhp, 141bhp, 174bhp and 202bhp.
As mentioned earlier, unlike other green cars, the BMW 118D certainly has got oomph when it comes to performance. The vehicle’s engine is placed far back in the chassis whilst its rear wheel drive set-up certainly provides the 118D with the best dynamics. The sharp brakes, quick steering, a sufficient gearshift and overall stable body control also lends it with an air of eagerness and a feeling of alertness that other cars of the same kind sometimes lack. Its 143bhp 2.0-litre turbo diesel is remarkable as well as it picks up quite eagerly when driven and despite its long gearing, it is surprisingly flexible. The vehicle’s overall performance is absolutely brilliant as well and it can certainly place itself a good distance ahead of its competition. It has the ability to hit 60mph within 9.1 seconds and has a maximum running speed of about 130mph.
What features should you expect?
The BMW 118D has an engine stop-start feature which works seamlessly. If you come to a stop, choose neutral and subsequently raise the clutch, the engine automatically stops. To bring the engine back to life, all you need to do is press the clutch and the engine would fire up instantly which makes this feature, rather unobtrusive. For a small family hatchback vehicle, many would tell you that it offers a refined environment and the engines stay hushed but there are certain exceptions when it comes to the diesel versions. Whilst both road and suspension noise are kept to the minimum, do expect a bit of wind noise on the motorway.
Another drawback would be the particularly impractical cabin. Considering the fact that it is a rear-drive vehicle, it doesn’t really provide that much boot and backseat room when compared to other hatchbacks currently in the market. But with that said, the BMW 118D does have a comfortable arrangement up front and overall sporty feel to the cabin which most people would appreciate, aesthetically.
The overall verdict?
If you are looking for a greener option then the BMW 118D is certainly a good choice. It is a perfectly stable ride. When it comes to economy, very few would be able to cast any doubt on this vehicles credentials. There are a few bits here and there that won’t agree with some people but, overall, it is a pretty great ride and should certainly be included in your options if you’re looking to buy a low emission vehicle.
